Call for Work: 3rd Biennial International Footprint Competition and Exhibition – due 4/21/12

The Center for Contemporary Printmaking is delighted to announce the 3rd Biennial Footprint International 2012: a competition and exhibition for fine-art prints that are exactly one foot square.

The square format was uncommon in art until the advent of 20th century abstraction. Rectangular horizontal and vertical shapes for landscape and portraiture, respectively, were, and in fact still are, the norm. For one thing, composing in the square is an artistic challenge.

Footprint International 2012 presents an opportunity for contemporary printmakers to address the square in 12 inches by 12 inches (30.5 x 30.5 cm). Footprint International is held every other year, alternating with CCP’s biennial International Miniature Print Competition. Download the prospectus.

About the Juror
The juror for this competition is Donald Sultan, one of America’s most prominent contemporary artists.

Since his first one man show in 1977, Donald Sultan has enjoyed a distinguished career as a painter, printmaker and sculptor and his extensive body of work has placed him at the forefront of contemporary art. In 1987, the Museum of Modern Art, New York presented Donald Sultan’s Black Lemons, and this series of large scale aquatints have become icons of 20th century American printmaking. His prints can be found in many public collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York and the Chicago Art Institute to name a few. In 2007 the Center for Contemporary Printmaking (CCP) published his aquatint Black and Blues, a print 12 X 12 ins. We are honored to welcome back Donald Sultan to be the juror of our 3rd Biennial Footprint International Print Competition.
